Mamet script would make any of those other scripts its bitch. Heist is written and directed by David Mamet. This is a problem because Hackman's character is supposed to occupy the moral high ground (always important when everybody's a criminal) but, in the story, comes across at least as treacherous as Devito's. The film doesn't stray from its sole purpose--getting Hackman through one last big job, which he's forced into.Frankly, Hackman has been this good before, but no better than this.
The rest of the cast were excellent, Delroy Lindo outshined Hackman as his right-hand thug, Ricky Jay pulls off the calm and collected badass, Sam Rockwell delivers a good presence that you just hate, DeVito was awesome as the break-your-balls "bad" criminal and Hackman played his part well as he always does. From then on it's all one twist after another, not all of which twist without leaving open holes behind. Numerous plot twists, double-crosses and humorous moments then add to the fun as the plot becomes increasingly complicated and the gang have to cope with some unexpected challenges. The cast have enough dialog to banter, but not enough to drone on about observational crap about humanity.In HEIST, not only are the characters spot-on toughies talking their talk, but they are laser-focused on their jobs. Gene Hackman is like always perfect, and i didn´t know the sexy side of Rebecca Pidgeon, beautiful and erotic in this movie. HEIST is Mamet at this best. The main problem of this film is that it includes too much of the Mamet stuff. To the defense of the movie, it is better the second time, as you are no longer worried about the ending and just enjoying the acting.
Mike Clark Passable ... With a movie like this, there's no risk of spoiling the ending, because the entire plot is merely a formality trudging toward a foregone conclusion. At a certain point, especially if one smaller con is revealed around the one-third mark, your audience is just left waiting for the inevitable upheaval of everything we assumed was real.
