I hope it may be useful to other parents, teens, and anyone else who cares about content and wants to make informed decisions about what they read. I was really impressed with Ms. Angelou's grandmother, a business woman in a time when black busineA lovely review of a very important memoir, Cheri. Before she won her multitudes of awards and honors, Maya was raised in rural Stamps, Arkansas by her grandmother and uncle during the depression.
In short, they have a common humanity.
It is written from the perspective of a parent who cares about what her teenage children read in school. It's not vulgar. I was constantly thinking I can’t believe she had these experiences. In 2001 she was named one of the 30 most powerful women in America by Ladies Home Journal. <3 There were a few little essays here and there that I wasn't entirely sure "fit" the memoir as a whole, but for the most part, I was completely enraptured by her words. Maya Angelou was a poet and Nobel laureate who once gave an address at President Clinton's inauguration. On the surface you would think they could have very little in common, yet they do. The white man is Terry Waite. I also will never forget how the black cotton workers would buy their breakfast from her grandmother on credit - and do backbreaking work all day earn the money to pay for it.
Maya Angelou is known for her series of six autobiographies, starting with I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, (1969) which was nominated for a National Book Award and called her magnum opus. Told with a winning combination of wit and wisdom, this is a paean to the powers of storytelling to build bridges across divides, and heal what has been damaged. First published in 1969 and now considered a modern classic, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings details Angelou's tumultuous childhood in poignant detail. I received mostly negative reactions to my review, but also a few positive comments which encouraged me. The first volume of Maya Angelou's autobiography is proof of her inner strength and a testament to the power of words. Maya Angelou ends her story of her youth with the birth of her son and that is a fitting ending for with a child comes an adult's responsibilities; although, she was only a teenager when she had him and had only had one very hasty and unsatisfying, almost impersonal, sexual experience to gain that son. It's age appropriate. I like Maya Angelou but I’ve read this book for the first time as parent of a 14yo who was assigned it for So, I’m going to be the negative one here. After Freeman is murdered, she stops speaking, frightened of words.Angelou finds her voice and a love of language and books through the help of Mrs Bertha Flowers who, writes Angelou, "has remained throughout my life the measure of what a human being can be". It is one of the most widely read and taught books by an African American woman. Before she won her multitudes of awards and honors, Maya was raised in rural Stamps, Arkansas by her grandmother and uncle during the depression. I don't think it's inappropriate. The first in a seven-volume series, it is a coming-of-age story that illustrates how strength of character and a love of literature can help overcome racism and trauma. The main setting for the first part of the novel is Stamps, a tiny (and very real) town on the border of Arkansas and Louisiana. This is my personal reaction to the book, and I support your right to make your own choices about what you read, too.I'm quite ashamed that it's taken me this long to read this book.
YeaSent by their mother to live with their devout, self-sufficient grandmother in a small Southern town, Maya and her brother, Bailey, endure the ache of abandonment and the prejudice of the local "powhitetrash." May 2014: I wrote this review a year and a half ago. Years later, in San Francisco, Maya learns that love for herself, the kindness of others, her own strong spirit, and the ideas of great authors ("I met and fell in love with William Shakespeare") will allow her to be free instead of imprisoned.I was assigned to read this book for the first time in 5th grade. I don't think it's inappropriate.
Of course, there are the classic Am...Sent by their mother to live with their devout, self-sufficient grandmother in a small Southern town, Maya and her brother, Bailey, endure the ache of abandonment and the prejudice of the local "powhitetrash."
