設計者が「フレンドリー・エイリアン」と言う愛称を付けた建物があります。レンガ色の屋根の間に見える、巨大な生物のようにも見える美術館です。中央ヨーロッパの街に建てられた「クンストハウス・グラーツ」をご紹介します。「クンスト」とはドイツ語で芸術の事を指します。「クンストハウス・グラーツ」は二人の建築家によってデザイン、設計されました。ピーター・クックは1936年にイングランド東部の街で生まれました。ロンドンの高名な建築学校を卒業した直後に、「アーキグラム」と言う前衛建築家の集団を結成し、同時に同名の雑誌を創刊しました。十数年後には一応解散しましたが、数多くの建築家がこれに参加していました。後年「アークグラム」は国の建築協会から最高の賞を受け、彼はナイトの称号を授けられました。コリン・フルニエは1944年ロンドンに生まれ、「アーキグラム」に準メンバーとして参加していました。ヨーロッパを中心に建築だけでなく、都市計画などの活動をしていますが、中国や香港の大学で教鞭もとっています。オーストリア共和国の南東部に位置する第二の都市グラーツに、この美術館は建っています。ローマ帝国の時代に建てられた砦が、この街の名前の由来と言われています。中世の面影を色濃く残し、レンガ色の屋根を持つ建物が旧市街地に多く現存しています。この建物群と17世紀に建てられた美しいエッゲンベルグ城は世界遺産に登録されています。学園都市として栄えてきたこの街は、2003年に欧州文化都市に指定され、1年を通して各種の文化事業に力を注ぎました。「クンストハウス・グラーツ」はこの年に作られた美術館で、今ではグラーツの新しい名所となっています。間違いなく建造物なのですが、生物に見えます。特に海洋生物に外見が似ています。うみうし、なまこ、上部に採光のための突起がたくさんあるのでウーパー・ルーパーにも見えます。外壁は青いアクリル板で覆われ、尚更、海の生き物によく似ています。アクリル板の裏側には600本の円形蛍光管が配置されていて、コンピューター制御により様々なグラフィックを描き出せるようになっています。全面が点灯した時には、それぞれの形が視力検査表のようです。街の俯瞰図を見ると、赤茶色の屋根に囲まれ、はまり込んでしまっているみたいです。自分の作品に、ニックネームを付けるほど愛着を持てるのは、その作品の出来栄えが想像以上だったからではないでしょうか。しかし、建造された当初は近隣住民から多少の非難があったようです。中世の名残とも言える街の佇まいが自慢だった住民からすれば、こんな奇妙な建物が出来たことは受け入れ難い事実だったことでしょう。それでも、時間が経つに従って街の自慢に変化してきました。今では「クンストハウス・グラーツ」は、この街有数の観光スポットとなっています。 The 930 circular fluorescent 40 W lamps are integrated into the 900 sqm external skin, through them it is so possible to regulate the brightness of the envelope. 1.
