The subject of films, TV shows and even plays, the Profumo Affair is known by many as one of the most scandalous in British politics.Profumo was married when he had a brief sexual relationship with 19-year-old model Christine Keeler in 1961.The affair hit the headlines after it was revealed Keeler had also been seeing Soviet naval attache, Captain Yevgeny Ivanov, sparking security fears among politicians and the public alike.Keeler was a model and topless showgirl at a cabaret club in Soho and after meeting osteopath Stephen Ward began to socialise with the upper-class.Keeler first met Profumo at a weekend-long party at Clivedon House – which has hosted many of the rich and famous throughout the years, including royalty.At first, Profumo denied any impropriety in a personal address to the House of Commons but later confessed to the affair.The fallout of the scandal resulted in the resignation of then Prime Minister Harold Macmillan and tarnished the reputation of the Conservative Party.The affair may also have contributed to the loss the Conservative Party suffered to Labour in the 1964 general election.Profumo was married during the time of his affair, to actress Valerie Hobson.Hobson starred in several films including Bride of Frankenstein (1935), Werewolf of London (1935) and Great Expectations (1946).She was born in County Antrim, Ulster, and began studying acting and dancing at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts before her 11th birthday.Hobson had been married before Profumo, to film producer Sir Anthony Havelock-Allan before they divorced in 1952.Despite her second husband’s fall from grace, Hobson stood by him and together they worked for charity for the remainder of their lives.Her final performance was in the original London production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical play The King and I.It opened on 8 October 1953 and ran for 926 performances, where Hobson played Mrs Anna Leonowens opposite Herbert Lom’s King.The couple had one son, author David Profumo who wrote Bringing the House Down: A Family Memoir (2006) about the scandal.He detailed how his parents did not disclose anything about the affair to him, instead learning about it from a boy at his school.Hobson died in 1998 aged 81, and Profumo died in March 2006 aged 91.Now the affair is the subject of a BBC drama titled The Trial of Christine Keeler.The affair was also the subject of Scandal (1989), in which Ian McKellen starred as Profumo.The show was written by novelist Amanda Coe, who said re-tellings of the scandal had never been told from the point of Keeler.She told the Guardian: “Once you start researching the story, the thing that really strikes you is what it must have felt like to be Christine Keeler.“She and Mandy became famous for being famous, and then added to this was the political espionage scandal and the fact that she was absolutely vilified as this slut who had brought down the government.”The six-part drama begins on Sunday, December 29 at 9 pm and stars Kingsman: The Golden Circle actress Sophie Cookson as Keeler.John Profumo wife: The stunning actress Profumo married before Christine Keeler affairThe Trial of Christine Keeler: Who was Lucky Gordon?
