Absolutely beautiful movie, the chemistry between Dani and James is intense and transcends the screen. But when James is alone in his cell, it's Dani he mutters to, and we get just enough cozy flashbacks to the two of them in bed (he reads John Donne to her) to remind us what the story is really about. The foreplay between Alicia Vikander & James McAvoy is palpable.

Trust me, the question in my title is leading somewhere with regard to this movie. I want to like this movie. 8 out of 9 found this helpful. The story just is slow, boring and dull and the 2 story lines do not hold it together which is unfortunate as it is beautiful to watch.. almost like a music video/documentary that yearns for a deeper story to make it come together. She and her peers expect the work to have a world-altering impact on our ideas about life here and elsewhere in the universe.As we watch the two charm each other on the beach and stroll atop chalky cliffs, we already know that James will soon be the prisoner of al Qaeda, tortured and starving. In a remarkable run that lasted from the mid-1970s until the start of the 1990s, the German director Wim Wenders created a personal cinema of tastes, as intimate as a mixtape and as leisurely as a road trip. Even seasoned filmgoers may have difficulty guessing whether this separation will end joyously or in tragedy. I tried to enjoy it but I kept on sleeping through it. These are the fundamental questions that I feel this film is tempting to explore, in a very picturesque, romantic and musical way.
The big existential statements (Alicia Vikander and James McAvoy play the central couple, Danielle “Danny” Flinders and James More. The story of a romantic encounter between a spy (James) and a scientist (Danielle), which displays reasonable chemistry between the characters, is concluded a year later with him being held hostage and her heading out on a risky deep-sea excursion. What we saw and heard were just a lot of terminology words out of her mouth, it felt more like they were forcefully memorized to make her look more like a scientist, but somehow it didn't work either.
I loved it and I hope more intelligent people would watch so that the rating will go up but again, it's not for mainstream audiences, they only need obvious entertainment, explosions and action. Was this review helpful?

I loved the opening sequence, it sets the tone. The desperation Dani shows to hear from James is touching and you really feel for her. The film stars Alicia Vikander and James McAvoy. Without giving away any spoilers, the format of this movie intercuts between the past romance and the current separation of the two main characters portrayed by James McAvoy and Alicia Vikander. I would award 10/10 for this rarely deep romantic movie, however i really need McAvoy to get back to his lady for once and live happily ever after. Auteur Wim Wenders's 2017 offer "Submergence" is a stylish love story, beautifully shot as you have every right to expect, and at times sound philosophical but need not be taken seriously.

Great idea! Is death and life and all humans interconnected in a forever intertwining bond? Though I was hoping it wouldn't have the cliched ending where they fell into each other's arms and walked off into the sunset, hand in hand, I DID expect an ending with some clarity. Maybe what urges you on is a hope they'll reunite and we'll see what seems to be promised.
