Seeing that there is no way to cure Mogo and that he is too far under Krona's control John decided to tap into the power of the Black energy and uses it to form a weapon and destroys Mogo completely. In 1997 he is attacked by Sinestro.The decision to use John Stewart instead of Kyle Rayner was met with some controversy.

For a brief period Kyle achieved godhood as Ion, when he absorbed the leftover energy in the sun after Hal Jordan sacrificed his life, energy which had merged and grown with energies released after Oblivion's defeat.
