I am glad they are both doing well now. The way that this culture/religion/way of life/country treats women is one that has no place in our society. My mom and dad had read the book and was really excited to watch it. Sally Field is wonderful as is the always versatile Alfred Molina. Brian Gilbert. Movies. No film made by Hollywood is going to portray Iran in a positive light and here Iranian women are portrayed as wailing doormats while the men are wife-beating brutes. These characters are not quite as fleshed out, with many of the reasons for the emotions not really being well understood (like why did Moody become soooo angry and change so quickly??) and why are some people helpful and others not.
It is a nightmarish, claustrophobic tale which had me gripped from the word go. When I was about 8 years old my whole family watched this movie together. In this thriller based on a true story, an Iranian-American man takes his American wife and daughter to visit Iran, only to keep them hostage there. Moody goes from loving husband to domestic abuser overnight with no explanation other than he has rediscovered his Muslim self. Field plays Betty an all-American housewife who has married an Iranian doctor called Moody and has a young daughter with him. I think this is an excellent movie and anyone that says anything different and has the nerve to say that things like that don’t happen are obviously bigots and believe in treating women like crap!! To call this true story "overheated" and dismiss it as "melodrama" is quite appalling. Thriller. Enjoyable dramatisation of a true story. In the USA (where I'm from), the only copies you can find are full-screen versions. Takes place right around the same time as the hostages in Iran were in the headlines. The book was so heartbreaking but the movie was even more heartbreaking. As depicted in the Not Without My Daughter movie, every family member and friend was to report to Moody any phone calls, outings or times his wife was late. Fortunately there are some brave Iranians, prepared to take great risks to help Betty, who break the stereotype.
