By 1780, The Holy Innocents’ Cemetery had reached its peak.

After months of heavy rainfall, a subterranean wall between a cellar of a house and the cemetery gave way– spilling the contents of one of the many common burial pits into the cellar of the neighbouring house.

This did nothing to help the smell, which was as if all the bad smells of the world had gathered in one place to throw a stench party. Not only did this warren offer ample space to house the remains, the tunnels were also rumoured to harbour revolutionaries and insurrectionists, so blocking them with piles of bones served a useful political purpose.

The place Joachim-du-Bellay in the Les Halles district now covers the site of the cemetery.

Originally called the Fountain of the Nymphs, it was constructed between 1547 and 1550 by architect Pierre Lescot and sculptor Jean Goujon in the new style of the French Renaissance.
