Everything about him had an enviable exactness and order, and so it seems only right that he should have died, at the age of 93, on the eve of the launch of a large retrospective at the Irish Museum of Modern Art.Scott was born in County Cork in 1921 into an old Anglo-Irish family of what in Ireland are known as ‘strong farmers,’ not quite gentry but certainly more prosperous and productive than neighbouring tenant small-holders.

Exhibiting regularly with the White Stag Group, in 1944 Patrick Scott held his first solo exhibition at the White Stag Gallery.During the 1940s he painted and designed the backdrops, tapestries and carpets for the Gate Theatre in Dublin.
In 2013 Patrick Scott married his partner of 30 years, Eric Pearce. Scott’s work in the 1950s can be seen to evolve over several phases. Yet there was nothing in Pat’s character or output to suggest he mourned the disappearance of the old order.On the contrary, from the beginning of his career he embraced the new and encouraged the avant-garde, albeit in the same neat manner he did everything.
