I don't want to tell people how to raise their kids but it's sort of the parent's fault for not sitting down with their children and explaining what is happening in the story and how they need to act. I know he is saying that primarily because he wants to keep on reading the rest of the books. Snow white's stepmother tried to eat her heart, Cinderella is abused, and Rapunzel was abducted. I agree with the above ages, but as you know your children best, you can flex these ages to how well you think your child could cope with them. I useally read for a LONG time at night so :/.I started reading them when i was 8, and i am halfway finished with the 6th book. It's a young adult series, which means that there are concepts that some kids won't understand, like how Voldemort's yearning for power destroyed him, and the innocent falling victim to death, and yes, there is a LOT of violence in 5-7, so I wouldn't reccomend to younger kids. She has only watched movie #1 and has not asked to watch others, which is ok by us.
Harry Potter certainly hit big enough initially to keep its wide audience, but to keep infantilizing the series and keep pushing it on kids way too young to appreciate it is to damage its future potential of reaching a wide audience. Tom Riddle possessing Ginny isn't as dark compared to the first book. A great book series!I started reading these books when I was 9, which I think is a really great age to start. Book 4 is tween friendly. Agree the later ones may not be suitable anyway.I have a precocious reader. At elementary age, kids are still open enough to enjoy and benefit from more idealistic, less provocative (and yes, less scary) stories. I started the movies much later, like when i was ten, and the first movie is actually one of the scariest for me, because of the part with Voldemort on the back of the teacher's head. Some ridiculous people down below have been saying this is for teens 11-12-13, but NO. You get a five star review. The fourth one gets a bit darker bc there is murder and torture, it depends on the kid but over all I think 8+ would be ok. I say skip the Cursed Child, as I wouldn't even count it as a Harry Potter book (Rowling did not even write it!) Who knows. I'd appreciate any thoughts about Tolkien.I am a big Tolkien fan, and I would recommend reading the books before watching the movies. My very prolific reader of a daughter (currently Year 6) didn't start to read independently until the end of Year 2. He was so traumatized that he was crying and throwing up in the mornings not wanting to go to school. I was a precocious, avid reader, and it does upset me sometimes that my DD is not that bothered about it.
I have no problem with letting kids watch and read these stories. and progress slowly through it.
